He had never before attempted a piece for such a combination of instruments: bassoon, clarinet, horn and oboe. He wrote to his father, “I myself consider it to be the best thing I have written in my life.” For Schumann, it was the first time a piano was combined with what is now known as a string quartet (substituting cello for double bass). The quintet is considered one of the major works of nineteenth century chamber music. The Mendocino Music Festival runs July 12 - 26. For more information: www.MendocinoMusic.org 707 937-2044
