He had never before attempted a piece for such a combination of instruments: bassoon, clarinet, horn and oboe. He wrote to his father, “I myself consider it to be the best thing I have written in my life.†For Schumann, it was the first time a piano was combined with what is now known as a string quartet (substituting cello for double bass).
