On August 7th of 1789, the new United States government created “The Lighthouse Act”, signed by President George Washington, which established the Lighthouse Service agency to build and maintain lighthouses along the new country’s shores. On the same date in 1989, 200 years later, National Lighthouse Day was turned into a national holiday on August 7th, with a proclamation signed by President George H. W. Bush.
