Palimpsest - Work by Mina Cohen

Partners Gallery is featuring mixed media paintings by Mina Cohen in June with a series entitled Palimpsest. Palimpsest means something reused or altered but bearing visible traces of its earlier form. This work comes out of desire to revise older works, most of which are very large and break them down into smaller units. Mina has reworked the individual pieces into new works that are unique smaller works.
 
The work is based on a very large encaustic painting from the late 1970's, a time that encaustic painting, an ancient painting technique, was having its revival. The underlying original media and color comes through in the new work in a subtle way. Mina's current interest in texture and pattern gives these new works a three dimensional quality.
